Social Justice Fund: Outstanding Philanthropic Organization

Social Justice Fund NW, this year's National Philanthropy Day Outstanding Organization, focuses on creating an engaged culture of social justice philanthropists.

They demonstrate what they encourage in the community – working at the front lines of social change. In 1997, Social Justice Fund Northwest opened their membership to people with a broad range of incomes, creating a stronger democratic orientation and growing into a true community-based foundation. This resulted in growing membership and a Board of Directors that reflected the diversity of the community they serve.

Fast forward to 2010 when Social Justice Fund started the Giving Projects. Over the last seven years, they have generated support for 54 projects from over 8,000 donors, with each project receiving an average of $100,000. The vast majority of these donors have not previously been engaged in philanthropy or supported social justice issues.

Social Justice Fund Northwest focuses on fostering significant, long-term social justice solutions throughout Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington State, and Wyoming. Their members build community and make grants, helping create a new, more engaged culture of social justice philanthropists.

"The giving projects provide an intentionally cross-race and cross-class group to come together to learn about social justice in the past and present. The Giving Projects also empower participants to become fundraisers, donor organizers, grant-makers and philanthropists. This work is radical and necessary."
