Makenna Schwab: Outstanding Young Philanthropist

Makenna was born with an incredibly rare skeletal disorder known as Larsen’s Syndrome. This pervasive connective tissue disorder causes virtually every joint in her body to be dislocated and causes instability in her spine. Makenna’s condition makes it difficult or impossible at times to walk or even breathe. Makenna Schwab, this year’s National Philanthropy Day Outstanding Young Philanthropist, strives to live without limits and inspires others to do the same.

Makenna has had more surgeries than birthdays in her 15 years. But that hasn’t slowed her down. Over the past seven years, Makenna has raised over $1 million through her nonprofit, Makspire Foundation, for organizations like Seattle Children’s Hospital and Camp Korey. She shares her story each year with thousands of people to inspire kids with serious medical conditions.

When she’s not traveling, volunteering or fundraising, she is a sophomore at Eastmont High School in East Wenatchee, WA. Last year she was named “Freshman Girl of the Year” at her high school in honor of her academic achievements and public service.

Join us to celebrate Makenna and the other 2018 National Philanthropy Day Award winners at the luncheon on November 1.

Apply for a 2019 Advancement Northwest Scholarship

Monday is your last chance to apply for a 2019 Advancement Northwest scholarship!

On the fence about applying? You can read about the impact a scholarship made for Tammy Do and Javier Womeldorff

Scholarships to Advancement Northwest can make a big impact on an individual’s life. Do you know someone who could benefit from 1:1 mentoring and professional development opportunities? Encourage them to apply for a 2019 scholarship.

The Advancement Northwest scholarship program focuses on supporting people who are early in their career or are looking to make a transition. A major goal is to encourage diverse talent in the fundraising profession, particularly including people of color, people with disabilities, and fundraisers working for small organizations and organizations in rural areas.

Growing Your Annual Giving: Benchmarking, Smart Strategies, and Key Metrics

Thursday, October 18 | 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Woodland Park Zoo

Next week is the annual giving session from Lauren Collette of Campbell & Company and Troy Coalman of FareStart, where they will discuss strategies for annual giving success. If you haven’t registered yet, this is your last chance!

Annual giving is a critical component of all individual giving strategies for today's revenue and tomorrow's major gift pipeline, but many organizations don't understand how to optimize this important program. How can you strategically grow your annual fund? Lauren and Troy will walk you through annual giving best practices, from leveraging benchmarking and measuring key metrics, to launching an annual giving assessment and monitoring program progress. Their panel will share recommendations and success stories from the field.

Having a Mentor is great at the start of our career, right? What I’ve discovered after serving as a Mentor with AFP for several years is that Protégés have a lot to offer, too. I’ve learned so much from them! It’s a win-win relationship.
