The Nordstrom and Gittinger Family: Outstanding Philanthropic Family

In The Nordstrom Way, a book about the business, Erik Nordstrom says, “Our people don’t have one look, one background, one culture. The common thread is they are themselves. They are genuine.” This quote perfectly sums up the Nordstrom and Gittinger family, the 2018 National Philanthropy Day Outstanding Philanthropic Family award winner.

The Nordstrom and Gittinger family have been heavily involved with philanthropy in Washington and across the globe for decades. Many nonprofit organizations in our community have benefitted from their financial support. Even more than the dollars, they share time to help nonprofits grow and succeed.

"For generations, members of this branch of the Nordstrom family have consistently displayed their devotion to our community through their generous philanthropy and exceptional level of commitment to the organizations in which they are involved. Rarely do they say 'no' when asked to participate in or lead a project, either boldly in the front or quietly behind the scenes. While the Nordstroms are exceptionally generous philanthropists, it may be their extraordinary leadership that sets them apart. They are willing to ask provocative questions, and they are willing to push the organizations they work with to new heights. They are thoughtful, compassionate, inspiring, funny and inspirational."

– Connie Kravas, University of Washington

“We are deeply honored, and more than a little humbled, to be able to support this region we love by investing in many of the organizations that are doing vital work to advance the lives of, and opportunities for, our fellow citizens.”

– Bruce Nordstrom and Anne Gittinger

Join us to celebrate the Nordstrom and Gittinger Family and the other 2018 National Philanthropy Day Award winners at the luncheon on November 1.

2018 Winter Social & Annual Meeting

Monday, December 10 | 6 to 8 p.m.
Sole Repair Shop, Seattle

Growing within the field of fundraising is all about connections. If you are new to the sector, you might not be familiar with this concept. Ask any seasoned professional and they will tell you that your next position is most likely to come through a first or second-degree connection.

How do you make the connections needed to advance in your career? Joining colleagues at the Advancement Northwest Winter Social is a great start. You'll have the chance to spend a couple of hours with fellow fundraisers from around the region. It's a great time to share successes and get advice.

Advancement Northwest provides a community I can turn to whenever I need inspiration, new ideas, feedback and encouragement. The people I’ve met over the years have played key roles in my journey, and I’m grateful to Advancement Northwest for being the glue that brings us together.

– Asa Tate, Make-A-Wish Foundation and incoming Advancement Northwest Board Chair

Join us on December 10 to build your network! This is also a chance for members to vote on the 2019 Board of Directors and the slate of officers.

Member Voices

I really do believe that fundraising is a team sport and that philanthropy isn't a zero-sum game. Unlike other sectors, all of us here are part of the same team dedicated to advancing philanthropy and advancing our communities and the world for the better. Being involved with Advancement Northwest gives me countless opportunities to meet other members of the team – and what do teams do? They learn from each other's experiences and they support each other. Most of what I know about fundraising came from others taking time to teach me, and the least I can do is pay it forward. I've been part of the National Philanthropy Day Committee for three years, and this event is like our SuperBowl, where the whole team comes out to celebrate philanthropy in our community – best day ever!

– Thaddeus Teo, United Way of King County

Remember to Send Updates to AFP

Have you switched jobs recently? Maybe you moved? If you are a current member of Advancement Northwest, all updates to your contact information should be directed to AFP International. Each month they send updates to the chapter. If you make a change when registering for an event with Advancement Northwest, it won't make it all the way into the system. If you update with the chapter first, make sure to then update AFP International.
