National Philanthropy Day Luncheon is Next Week!

Do you love hearing stories about people making a difference? So do we! Join us to celebrate amazing stories of generosity at the National Philanthropy Day Luncheon next week.

Below, read about each of the 2018 Award Winners and how they exemplified outstanding philanthropic work within the last year.

Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation: Superfeet – Each employee-owner has two paid days to “Be the Awesome” and volunteer for a nonprofit they are passionate about.

Outstanding Philanthropic Small Business: Phnom Penh Noodle House – Their presence and involvement in community programs have made them a symbol of strength and survival to our refugee communities.

Outstanding Philanthropic Organization: Social Justice Fund – The Giving Projects provide the opportunity for an intentionally cross-race and cross-class group to come together to learn about social justice.

Outstanding Philanthropists: Bob & (the late) Mary Ann Wiley – The two were inseparable partners in crime, dedicated to making the world a better place.

Outstanding Philanthropic Family: The Nordstrom and Gittinger Family – Rarely do they say no when asked to participate in or lead a project, either boldly in the front or quietly behind the scenes.

Outstanding Young Philanthropist: Makenna Schwab – Makenna’s had more surgeries than birthdays but that doesn’t diminish her belief that she can live without limits.

2018 AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course

November 14 and 15, 2018
City University, Seattle

This two-day course is a great entry to fundraising. The AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising Course is composed of seven modules that have been designed by experienced fundraising professionals to meet the real-world needs and challenges nonprofit organizations face every day. This program includes case studies and projects for groups and individuals, making the learning experience both substantive and enjoyable. This intensive program will provide an overview of skills, techniques, and program components for individuals with zero to four years of fundraising experience.

2018 Winter Social & Annual Meeting

Monday, December 10 | 6 to 8 p.m.
Sole Repair Shop, Seattle

Growing within the field of fundraising is all about connections. If you are new to the sector, you might not be familiar with this concept. Ask any seasoned professional and they will tell you that your next position is most likely to come through a first or second-degree connection.

How do you make the connections needed to advance in your career? Joining colleagues at the Advancement Northwest Winter Social is a great start. You'll have the chance to spend a couple of hours with fellow fundraisers from around the region. It's a great time to share successes and get advice.

Join us on December 10 to build your network! This is also a chance for members to vote on the 2019 Board of Directors and the slate of officers.

Listing Salary Ranges on Job Postings is Important

Listing salary ranges on job postings is an aspect of the AFP Advancement Northwest Career Center that we are asking all job posters to start. Here’s why:

Efficiency: As our friend, Vu Le, said in his post on this subject, “If you think not listing salaries will allow more candidates to apply, you may be right. But will they be the right match?”

Going through even the first step of the interview process with people who aren't able to take the position because of the salary is highly inefficient for both you and the interviewee. For you, it's because you're not interviewing legitimate candidates, and for the person you interviewed, it's because they had to prepare for and invest time in an interview for a position they couldn’t take. You would be better off including the salary from the outset, and interviewing the pool of people who could take the position. Plus, it could drive away good candidates who won’t apply for listings without salary ranges.

Equity: Not listing a salary or stating "depends on experience," perpetuates the gender wage gap, and discriminates against people of color and other underrepresented communities. We all need to make a living and deserve to support our families on our salaries, not just people who are aggressive negotiators. By stating a salary, or range, potential candidates can decide if the position will allow them to meet their needs.

We look forward to seeing more job posts with salary ranges included on the Career Center.

Have You Joined an Affinity Group Lately?

As fundraisers, people come in and out of our lives. You may meet a donor while working at your first job and reconnect years later within another organization. Likewise, you might meet a peer at a conference or event. They might become your best friend or an enjoyable colleague you see periodically. Some of the people you may rely on most are those you meet in an affinity group

Three of my closest fundraising friends I met years ago when I joined an affinity group. Each of us led the group for a while, though none of us are involved anymore. We still get together a few times a year to catch up and provide the emotional support needed to make it through difficult phases. They are the first to toast my success and provide a shoulder to cry on when needed. They help provide the emotional bedrock I need to be a successful fundraiser.

– Christie Cotterill, Washington State University

If you have yet to join an affinity group, check out the listings we have online and see if any are right for you.
