Notes from the Desk of the President

My 2018 personal mantra was “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work." Unoriginal and corny, yes. But effective in reminding me that no matter how hard one works, one is likely to go further when working as a team. And so it was for Advancement Northwest this year.

From the volunteers who work on the membership committee to those who shepherd our email communications, there was an incredible team of volunteers working behind the scenes to make Advancement Northwest work for you.

Some of the highlights of their work include upgrades to the Advancement Northwest's Career Center which allows both job seekers and hiring managers more information and resources. Robust programs presented at the Forum on Strategic Fundraising and monthly core programs like Leading Edge providing fundraisers with the chance to engage with peers and industry leaders alike on tough topics like sexual harassment and pay inequity. And, this past summer’s intentional and transparent board recruitment effort means your 2019 Advancement Northwest Board will be more diverse with respect to gender, age, and ethnicity.

Please join us on Monday, December 10 at Sole Repair Shop for the Winter Social and Annual Meeting to celebrate how teamwork has set us up for success in 2019.

Warm regards,

Will State Overtime Changes Impact You?

We wanted to share a message from our friends at Washington Nonprofits about the proposed overtime threshold changes.

Do you have salaried staff making under $70,000 per year? The state is proposing a change that affects how you do business.

Washington State’s Department of Labor and Industries is proposing raising the overtime threshold significantly. Employees under the threshold cannot be salaried – they must be paid hourly and be eligible for overtime. The overtime threshold levels the state is considering are annual salaries of either $56,160 or $70,200.

What would this mean for your nonprofit? The Department of Labor & Industries needs to hear from nonprofits about how this affects you and your nonprofit.

Complete the survey so that Washington Nonprofits can represent your interests as we testify and submit comments on your behalf.

Interested in speaking on a smaller scale? The Advancement Northwest's Core Programs committee is planning on a new approach for planning monthly programs in 2019 for Essentials and Leading Edge. The committee will be curating one program per month to bring improved focus on programming and sector trends, as well as needs for our membership. For 2019, we will be focusing each quarter on a different phase of the Donor Lifecycle. Investing in Future Nonprofit Leaders

If you were at the 2018 Forum on Strategic Fundraising, you heard from Hong Chhour about his experience as an AFP Advancement Northwest scholar.

Through my involvement with Advancement Northwest, I’ve grown so much as a person and as a fundraiser. Because of my experiences, I firmly believe that development professionals with robust peer networks, strong fundraising acumen, and effective leadership skills are leading our sector to become more professionalized and strategic. The people who are going to be tomorrow’s leaders will do this because the fundraisers who came before them invested in them personally and professionally.

– Hong Chhour

You can make scholarships, like the one Hong received, possible.

When you invest in Advancement Northwest, you are creating the next generation of fundraising leaders. These are the people who will boldly find new ways to solve today’s problems. These leaders will ensure that everyone has enough to eat. They will be at the forefront of curing cancer. They will care for the people in our population who are aging.

Donations to Advancement Northwest are used to fulfill strategic initiatives. Currently, our focus is on creating opportunities for involvement for people who represent traditionally underrepresented groups for our chapter. This includes people of color, individuals from small nonprofits, the LGBTQ community, people who are differently-abled, and those living in rural or remote areas.

In 2018, we awarded 12 scholarships with almost all of the recipients working in small nonprofits spread across four counties in Western Washington. About half of the individuals identified as being people of color.

Scholarships are made possible because of gifts from people like you. Will you invest in future leaders today
