President's Message

You are a renewable resource; invest in yourself

Spring is a wonderful time of renewal. The air is fresh; flowers and trees are starting to bloom. We, both personally and as philanthropy professionals, can also renew and evolve. I can't think of an easier way to blossom than through our amazing program lineup.

Our programs provide one-of-a-kind ways to expand your skills, your network, and to receive the self-care you deserve. I'll be in Bellingham for our Igniting Philanthropy session in April and in Bellevue for the Forum on Strategic Fundraising in June. I hope to see you at one of these programs. Our goal is to provide our members with resources to think outside of the box, and to learn and test new approaches to address the pressing issues that each of our nonprofits face.

One of those is issues is diversity, equity, inclusion, and access. Advancement Northwest, along with AFP chapters around the world, are committed to eradicating entrenched systems of oppression. You'll see this reinforced in our program lineup and how we approach our work. As a woman of color in the nonprofit sector, this is especially important to me. A key reason why I accepted the opportunity to serve as your president was to illustrate that ALL are welcome and to ensure you see yourself reflected in our community. I hope you'll join us.

Asa Tate
2019 Advancement Northwest President

11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Join us for a fun and interactive session all about branding with Stephanie Schoo, Director of Marketing for FareStart and Maren Finzer, Development Officer/Marketing and Branding Strategist on a “purposeful pause.” Discover the key components of a strong brand and the crucial role they play in fundraising. You’ll see examples of brands that work and learn how strong brands can convert potential donors into loyal fans.

How to Use Creativity to Improve the Donor Experience
Thursday, April 18
Bellingham Golf & Country Club
11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

As fundraisers, it’s our privilege to create moments of happiness for our donors each time we interact with them. Imagine you are asked to make a list of a dozen new ways to do just that. Are you madly scribbling, uncomfortably sweating, or doing a little of both? Shanon Doolittle will coach you on how to create fun and fresh ways to bring joy to your donors’ lives.

Forum on Strategic Fundraising – Early Bird Deadline ends 4/23!

We have 24 exciting speakers in four tracks, lightning talks, and snack time sessions, plus a hall of exhibitors, a pop up studio for headshots, and opportunities galore for networking with your peers. Early bird registration ends April 23, so take a minute and register now!

Our Work on DEIA Recognized

Advancement Northwest is honored to have received a Friends of Diversity designation from AFP International. This designation recognizes chapters who have accomplished many of the key objectives in our goal of advancing diversity. We acknowledge that our diversity, equity, inclusion, and access work is ongoing and commit to the process of dismantling outdated and damaging institutional norms.

In reviewing our current procedures and in planning for the future, we start with a racial equity lens, understanding that there are multiple systems of oppression to address. If you are interested in working with our DEIA committee, please contact Bryan Baker, VP of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access at [email protected].

CFRE Application Deadline is April 15

Are you ready to become a Certified Fund Raising Executive? View the requirements and start your application at the CFRE website. AFP members receive a special discounted rate of $700 - that's a 20 percent savings off the regular rate. Have questions or need help getting started? Contact CFRE International at [email protected].

Policy News & Updates

The Charitable Giving Coalition, chaired by AFP, has written to the House Ways and Means Committee, detailing how the rate of giving dropped precipitously in 2018 and have called on Congress to enact a universal charitable deduction. This link takes you to the report.

The U.S. Department of Labor has formally published proposed regulations to update the minimum salary threshold that partially determines whether executive, administrative, and professional employees are exempt from overtime pay. Learn more in this National Council of Nonprofits initial analysis
